Rough Terrain ForkliftThe rough terrain forklift dates back to about 1946 when a two-pronged lift attachment was placed on a power buggy or tractor chassis. This early machine was used around construction sites and could lift about 1,000 pounds (454 kg) to a height of 30 inches (76 cm). Rapid development of vertical tower forklifts for industrial use was adapted to rough terrain forklifts as well. By the mid-1950s, capacities of 2,500 pounds (1,135 kg) and lift heights of up to 30 feet (9 m) were available. In 1958, the first four-wheel drive rough terrain forklift was introduced. It had a capacity of 6,000 pounds (2,724 kg) at a lift height of 22.5 feet (7 m), or 3,000 pounds (1,362 kg) at 35 feet (11 m). In 1962, the first telescoping-boom rough terrain forklift came on the market. The telescoping boom allowed loads to be placed out from the base of the machine, both above grade and below grade. This was especially handy in crowded construction areas where open trenches, construction debris, or other construction work prevented a vertical lift fork-lift from operating close to the area where the material was needed.
The new 7FB electric pneumatic counterbalanced forklift from Toyota Industrial Equipment uses the combination of AC power and Toyotas exclusive System of Active Stability (SAS) to provide safe, efficient handling. The SAS feature actively monitors and controls the lift trucks movements to prevent the vehicle from tipping. The built-in system also helps reduce the chance of injuries and product damage caused from falling loads that have been tilted too far forward or backward. The zero-emissions AC motor contributes to the units smooth control, providing greater torque and acceleration than in similar trucks with DC motors. There is no lag time, and the unit offers excellent gradeability, allowing it to perform a broad range of applications. The low-maintenance AC motor system also features battery energy recovery using three forms of regenerative braking; plug braking for when the direction is switched between forward and reverse; coast control when the accelerator is released during travel; and foot braking for whenever the brake pedal is pressed while the unit is moving.
Mitsubishi Forklift Trucks releases its latest innovative models. The new 3,000 to 6,000 pound capacity electric cushion tire forklift series (FBC15K-FBC30K) offers performance-boosting choices while minimizing acquisition, operating and maintenance costs. Features include a hydraulic system with a revolutionary valve, transistorized drive controller featuring proportional regenerative braking and an interactive LED display.

Not a day goes by without yet another article extolling the virtues of the Internet. An estimated 30 million worldwide users to date and more logging on every day. To the small business owner, the real question is, Where does the hype end and the reality begin? Is the Internet really a viable proposition for the traditional small business, normally constrained by lack of time, staff and money? 10 questions to ask yourself The best way to determine whether or not the Internet makes sense for your business is to apply a simple “yes” or “no” answer to 10 important marketing questions: 1. Do my clients require specific product information before they can buy my product/service? 2. Do I spend a majority of my time selling the benefits of my product only to be asked, “Can you send me more information?” 3. Is my long-distance phone bill more than $100 per month? 4. Have I lost business as a result of playing phone tag with a potential customer because I was unable to “sieze the moment?” 5. Would a new employee handling sales paperwork free me to increase my companys revenues? 6. Is there an international market for my product? 7. Does my product have a story to tell? 8. Am I spending more than 20 percent of every dollar I make on marketing-related expenses? 9. Would instant customer feedback benefit my business? 10. Would the ability to capture orders 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, help my business? If you answered “yes” to just one of these questions, you should at least explore the possibilities that Internet commerce can offer. If you answered “yes” to five or more, you should dedicate some serious time and resources to finding out how the Internet actually works (and how it can work for you). If you answered “yes” to eight or more of the questions, you need a fast-track education about the Internet before your competitors claim the medium for themselves. The smart small business owner will make plans to explore the Internet, find out what the Web can deliver and then formulate a strategy to exploit it. As Jeff Vick, Marketing Specialist at Creative Video explains, “The Internet will do to business in the 21st century what the telephone did to business in the 20th century.” The Web — How does it work? According to Vick, the Internet works well as a commercial sales tool for businesses that need to exchange information in order to specify a particular products size, color, model, price, etc. Multiple orders can be booked, billed and fulfilled through a simple response mechanism included on an Internet site. Much of this information can be communicated through the Web. While it is actually only one portion of the Internet, the Web serves as an extensive reference library that can provide any level of additional information about a particular subject, issue, item or product. As in a spiders web configuration, the Web provides an ever-increasing source of interlocking information about the subject in question. Simply point and click and you can dive deeper into additional layers of information. The Web also has certain features that make it ideal for marketing. It can display pictures and massive amounts of text about your product as well as send and receive order information while at the same time generating a receipt. If your product requires a lengthy explanation in order to communicate its benefits, the Web is the place to do it. Customers and prospects can view that information at their own pace — in many instances, via sophisticated video and audio commercials. Since were talking digital information here, there is very little difference between one word and one thousand words. And if you feel that youre spending too much time processing paperwork and not enough time selling, a well-designed Web page may be one of the potential keys to your businesses future success. How important is e-mail? An important byproduct of the Internet is e-mail, or electronic mail. Once you learn to use this valuable tool, youll wonder how you ever got along without it. Forget about what time it is, or whether its “worth a call” — with e-mail, it costs no more to send a message to Sydney that it does to Syracuse (the actual cost is about $1.00 an hour). And time zones become irrelevant as well. You and the recipient can view the messages at your convenience, thereby eliminating the dreaded game of telephone tag. So get serious! How does the smart business operator approach the formidable and intimidating task of investigating the Net? First, gather your thoughts as to what you would like your Web site to accomplish. Imagine that your customer can ask you anything he/she wants to know about your company and product — anything from product price to employee birthdays — and in no particular order. Analyze each possible scenario and list all the information relevant to it. Then, and only then, begin to organize the scenarios into a flow chart. Once you have the flow chart polished, try to find flaws in it. If your customer is browsing through the pricing section of your flow chart, will he/she be more interested in going to shipping next or reading your companys mission statement? After you feel that youve developed a solid grasp of the different portions of the business that youd like to present to your clientele, you are now ready to interview potential agencies who are skilled in creating Web pages. According to Vick, there are 3 questions you should ask a potential Web page creator: 1. Have you done this before? 2. Who have you done this for? 3. May I call them? While creating some Web pages may require the skills of a computer Ph.D., most will not, and there are competent companies in most major markets capable of accomplishing the task in a cost-effective fashion. Prices for creating a simple Web site can range from a low of $2,500 to high of $20,000. In fact, some of the Fortune 500 marketers have created sophisticated and complex Web pages that can literally run into the hundreds of thousands of dollars, and in some cases, the millions. But for the average small business, the investment will probably be in the $5,000 to $10,000 range. And remember, you must keep your Web site content fresh, or your prospects will have no reason to come back. Seeing your own World Wide Web site up and running on the Internet can be a proud moment for any business owner. It also can mean the start of a whole new way of doing business. It has the potential to increase productivity by extending operating time to a full 24 hours a day. But this will only happen if your business really needs this technology and can use it effectively. Evaluate your situation honestly. If its right for you, acquire it. If its not, save the money. And if you want to see what its all about, contact a Web creator and ask to see a demonstration. One picture is really worth 1,000 words. Alf Nucifora is an Atlanta based marketing consultant. He may be contacted by e-mail zubicon

After the death of his sister, Rebecca, four years ago, Jaym Wolfe considered abandoning the carpet-cleaning trade in which he had worked for more than two decades. Instead, his sorrow led him in another direction. This past summer, Wolfe founded a new business, TerraClean Eco-effective Carpet Care, which uses cleaning solutions that are nontoxic and environmentally friendly. The health hazards of working with carpet-cleaning chemicals were always in the back of Jaym Wolfes mind. He had experienced headaches, nausea and cracked skin on his hands and fingers while cleaning carpets - everyone in the business did. It went with the territory.
The acres of carpeting at a typical hotel represent a significant expense, and most hoteliers prefer to keep that investment looking as good as possible for as long as possible. Typically, hotel staff members clean carpeting, according to Greg Rosenblatt, administrative manager for Stark Carpets. Hotel personnel should consult with a qualified carpet cleaner to develop a service plan thats appropriate for the type of carpet and its usage. With the right cleaning schedule and methods, carpet can be kept looking like new.
The home-cleaning experts at Hoover recommend weekly or more frequent vacuuming with a Hoover upright with an allergen-filtration system. For many people, spring is considered the high season for allergies. But for some homeowners who dont routinely and thoroughly clean their carpets, the sniffling and sneezing associated with allergies may persist yearround. Deep cleaning, a job once handled mainly by professional carpet cleaners, can be done quickly and effectively by consumers with a Steamvac deep cleaner. The cleaner distributes a solution of hot tap water and special detergent into the carpet, agitates the fibers with its exclusive, five rotating-brush system and then extracts the solution containing dirt. The five-brush agitation system and carpet detergent helps release the dirt and allergens from the carpet fibers for removal by the Steamvac deep cleaner.

Hair RemoverHair removers, or depilatories, are products designed to chemically or physically remove undesirable hair from areas on the body. Hair removers are made by mixing together the appropriate raw materials in large stainless steel tanks and then filling them into individual packages. In use for thousands of years, they continue to be an important part of many peoples everyday hygiene. Currently, new hair removers are being investigated which are less irritating, more effective, and longer lasting.Epilatories were the first type of hair removers. The most common of these products is an epilating wax. This product is heated and spread on the skin in the desired area. It is then allowed to cool and harden. The mass of wax is then rapidly removed, pulling with it about 80% of the hairs. It is a slightly painful procedure and a mild anti-+ septic is typically applied to protect against skin irritation. Epilatories have not been widely used by individual consumers, how-ever they are popular in beauty salons. While epilatories continue to be an important method of hair removal, depilatories are much more common in personal care. Depilatories rely on a chemical reaction between materials in the formula with components of the hair. When the depilatory is applied to the skin, a component in the product, such as thioglycolic acid, reacts with the protein in the hair and weakens it. The hair can then be removed from the skin by gentle wiping, scraping, or rinsing. This is effective on any part of the hair structure that is above the level of the skin.
With sundress season right around the corner for most of the country, hair removal is top-of-mind, which explains the onslaught of new tools into the category. Lineance European Body Essentials recently introduced its line of pleasant-smelling depilatories to U.S. drug stores. Products in the Lineance line, such as Lineance Bikini Body Hair Remover Kit retailing for $9.99, aim to make hair removal less of a dreaded chore with products formulated with herbal botanicals to nourish the skin. In May, Pfizers Schick brand will attempt to edge out the competition in the womens razor category with Intuition. The razors cartridge contains triple blades surrounded by a skin-conditioning solid that lathers when wet, eliminating the need for shave gel. Schick Intuition, which will sell for a suggested retail price of $7.99, will launch around the same time that disposable Gillette Sensor 3 and Bic Comfort 3 hit stores.
Q Im tired of shaving every single day. Has laser hair removal improved at all over the past couple of years, and is it right for me? * Lasers work best on dark hair and light skin. The low-energy light targets pigment in the hair follicle, damaging it enough to slow down future growth. The light is attracted to color like a magnet, Gilmore explains. Since blonde hair doesnt have much pigment, the laser wont gravitate toward it as well as it would dark-colored hair. And if your skin is naturally dark or tanned (even from self-tanners), the laser wont detect dark hair against it. * You wont get instant results. Hair cycles through one growth phase and two dormant phases, usually within two to four months total. So as more hair grows in, youll need additional treatments, about four weeks apart.

An mp has blasted dentists who hoodwink patients into paying for private services. Gerry Steinberg, MP for Durham City, said patients still entitled to NHS treatment were being misled into paying for private dental services. Mr Steinberg said: It is clear that more dentists are choosing to work entirely within the private sector, where the financial rewards are greater. However in establishing their private businesses, some dentists are misleading patients by failing to adequately inform them.
Insurance cover for dentists in the North East is to be made compulsory in efforts to protect patients. All dentists will have to take out full indemnity cover before registration as part of new powers for the General Dental Council (GDC), Health Minister Rosie Winterton announced. This will mean that dentists in the region who are found to have harmed patients are insured and able to pay compensation.

Severe-plastic deformation processes are receiving increasing attention as methods to develop ultrafine-grain microstructures at the nanoscale. One such process, equal-channel angular extrusion (ECAE), offers the ability to manufacture bulk products from a wide range of metals and alloys. Despite the apparent simplicity of ECAE, however, metal flow and texture evolution are complex. The application of process, crystal-plasticity, and workability models to describe deformation and the evolution of microstructure, texture, and defects during ECAE is summarized in this article. The need for high performance in structural applications has spurred the development of a wide range of materials with novel compositions, microstructures, and crystallographic textures. As with all new materials, the development of economical and robust manufacturing techniques is critical for commercial feasibility. One class of metals of particular interest at present is based on nanostructured grain and particle sizes. Although a number of methods have been developed to obtain nanostructured materials, perhaps the greatest attention has focused on bulk-deformation processes of ingotmetallurgy products. Typically, such deformation processes employ large plastic strains at ambient or slightly elevated temperatures. These processes are known as severe-plastic deformation (SPD). By this means, the subgrain/grain size in conventional microcrystalline materials is gradually refined by mechanisms such as grain fragmentation, dynamic recovery, and geometric recrystallization.1 The large number of recent international conferences2-6 devoted to SPD processing and the properties of ultra-fine grain materials attests to the growing importance of the technology. One of the main challenges of SPD processing to obtain mill products is minimizing or eliminating the substantial change in cross-sectional area usually associated with large deformation. Hence, most SPD processes rely on deformation in shear, on multi-directional forging in which the billet shape is continually restored, or on lamination (e.g., accumulative roll bonding of sheet materials). Processes that are primarily shear include equal-channel angular extrusion (ECAE), severe torsional deformation, and twist extrusion. Equalchannel angular extrusion has been transitioned to several commercial installations, and others are planned.

Home Construction On A New Road If you are about to go shopping for a new home, consider this: Antiquated building and zoning regulations forced on builders by local governments probably add 10 to 25 percent to the price of your dream house. If you are in the business of building or selling homes, consider this: You undoubtedly would have a broader market if those regulations did not exist.
FMI estimates that highway construction expenditures will increase by approximately 3 percent in 2004, to a mark just shy of $64 billion. The year 2005 will be a near repeat in pace of growth, adding another $2 billion in volume put-in-place. This is slightly greater than what has been witnessed over the past two years, when growth was closer to 2 percent. It is said that timing is everything, and timing is precisely why the near-term growth outlook for highway construction falls below initial expectations. Under normal conditions, it could well be expected that 2004 and 2005 would see an increase in spending of perhaps twice as much or more than currently projected. However, the lack of a permanent federal transportation act has left the various state transportation agencies in a state of limbo and is the primary limiting factor for the industry. The previous six-year federal transportation act, TEA-21, expired on Sept. 30, 2003. Since no new bill was enacted at that time, the state transportation agencies have been operating under a series of extensions for more than nine months. The uncertainty and disruption caused by this situation has limited the planning and programming capabilities of these agencies and subsequent project letting capabilities, a condition that will continue until a permanent bill is enacted.

Exercise and Cancers: Research Opportunities for Health-Related Fitness ScientistsRepresentatives from the American Cancer Society (ACS), the National Cancer Institute (NCI), and the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) will challenge AAHPERD members to contribute to cancer prevention and control, describing the most promising research opportunities and resources to support investigation of the relationships between cancers and exercise. The presentation will be based on a synoptic article being developed by the ACS and the Office for Health Promotion of Northern Illinois University. Ruth Corcoran of ACS will describe a proposed collaborative research agenda, suggesting that two sets of consensually developed guidelines are needed to promote such research: one set to facilitate dissemination of what experts already know to the public and providers (including exercise specialists); and a second set to facilitate further collaborative research. Speakers from CDC and NCI will outline what is known about these topics, and how exercise scientists can contribute to further development (see accompanying abstracts). Presenters will recommend a process to develop research priorities, involving cancer experts, public health scientists, and relevant interest groups in AAHPERD. Members will be asked to contribute ideas for a research agenda. The Cancer-Exercise Agenda: Opportunities in Applications Research

BUYER ZONE: ONLINE BANKS STILL BATTLE CONSUMER DISTRUST. ITS BEEN A STRENUOUS BATTLE FOR Internet-only banks since they emerged in 1995. The concept of a bank surviving solely on the Web seems promising–unlike other online businesses, banks dont have to deal with inventory warehouses or product returns. But customers arent signing on, and profits are slim to none. Still, Internet-only banks would seem to be the way to go for entrepreneurial businesses, whose finances are more complex than the average consumers but usually small enough to be handled in-house. Why not choose banking at the comfort of your own desk over trekking down to the local bank branch to stand in line? Also, because Internet-only banks save money by handling operations online–for example, theres no need to rent office space and then outfit it–they pass those savings on to you in the form of high interest rates on checking and savings accounts, beating traditional banks typical 1 percent or less interest rate with a more robust 5 percent.
THE big four banks lag far behind their Internet competition in service and value for money, say their customers. More than half think the big four - Natwest, Lloyds TSB, HSBC and Barclays - run accounts for their own advantage and almost half think the banks make excessive profits. Independent market researchers Taylor Nelson Sofres found that just under half those surveyed feel that the banks rip them off.

Cleaning cavities with a light touch Theres no vibration. No noise. And most important, no pain. The advantages of laser beams over drill bits are legion, says dental researcher Terry Myers. Although the use of lasers on teeth still awaits Food and Drug Administration approval, recently completed clinical tests went so well he expects approval within “maybe three to six months.” Myers, a dental consultant to American Dental Laser, Inc., in Birmingham, Mich., reported results from 150 teeth in 100 patients who had cavities in the enamel, or outer layer, of their teeth. The Nd-YAG laser–which has at its core the rare-earth element neodymium grown on a crystal of yttrium-aluminumgarnet–vaporises soft organic material in dental cavities, but is too weak to damage healthy enamel, he says.

Competing against the big box retailers is a challenge for Kansas small-town businesses, but state programs can help their owners work toward success. “There are so many challenges that face small mom-and-pop or individual business owners,” said Jeanne Stinson, state coordinator for the Kansas Main Street Program. “Theyre faced with huge competition from the big box stores and most of them, I think, in Kansas have learned to live with that competition. Its not going to go away.” “Promotional activities are one of those four points,” she said. “We also look to the organization itself — their group. Who is doing this work and making sure that its adequately funded, that they have the ability to do their advertising and to make assistance to businesses.”

Radio The new series of Radio Fours On the Ropes, featuring people whove been up against it, began in lively fashion this week (Tuesday) when John Humphrys introduced his guest with the words, `You dont see many insurance companies being promoted by its gay founder posing naked with his boyfriend but then you dont meet many businessmen like Ivan Massow. My first thought on hearing this was, maybe its just as well. After a difficult childhood, which he didnt wish to go into for the entirely sensible reason that his family was still alive, he became an insurance clerk in Bristol at a time when he was coming to terms with his homosexuality. He was horrified to find that insurance companies discriminated against gays by insisting that they take HIV tests, and then turning down their applications for insurance and mortgages. Whatever the rights and wrongs of this, and one can see both sides of it, he decided to set up his own insurance company specialising in policies for homosexuals.

The play involves the love intrigues of rich Americans big game hunting in Africa in the mid-1930s, and offers a view of adultery, sexual politics, gender roles, fundamental values, and the hunt for happiness. Written in the vein of social satire, Safari includes thinly disguised Hemingway acquaintances such as Mason herself, her love Richard Cooper, white hunter Philip Percival, Bror von Blixen, and Isak Dinesen. **********
Bank holiday revellers are invited to take a safari with a difference this weekend. The seaside safaris have been organised by The Northumberland Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty Partnership and involve learning more about the fascinating marine life of the North East. The Northumberland coast covers 135sq km, and is well known for its sweeping sandy beaches and open views. With all this to explore, the first seaside safari takes place at Bamburgh on Bank Holiday Saturday with the second at Alnmouth on the Sunday.
Whether you stay in a luxury lodge or go for a more authentic wilderness challenge, there are plenty of safaris to suit your style Lodge standards and styles vary enormously. Some are flights of architectural fantasy providing unimaginable luxury for as little as six guests, others are huge hotel-style abominations that disgorge legions of the dreaded zebra-striped minibuses. In recent years, sense has prevailed and there has been a growing requirement from governments for operators to build lodges that blend into their surroundings and make the minimum possible environmental impact. At the same time, rising standards throughout the tourism and hotel industry worldwide have lead to a far greater emphasis on design, comfort and service. South Africa probably leads the field at the luxury end of the small private lodge market although Kenya, Zimbabwe and Botswana could all put forward strong contenders. Around the western side of Kruger National Park are a number of private concessions whose lodges vie with one another for the greatest degree of opulence. Singita Boulders, possibly the ritziest of the lot, boasts air-conditioned suites each with its own swimming pool, spa and gym. Those hedonists and honeymooners (who account for a significant proportion of the safari market) primarily seeking comfort with a backdrop of wildlife will welcome this level of pampering, but traditionalists may find the ambience out of kilter with a wilderness experience.

The vision of Horse Sense owners Shannon and Richard Knapp began with a
desire to rescue horses in need, especially those that cant be ridden. “I
still cant believe that some people think horses are worthless unless they
function as beasts of burden,” states Knapp. The Knapps began pairing
people with horses in 2001. Shortly after, the idea of opening an Equine Assisted Psychotherapy and
Learning Center seemed like a win-win situation. “Horses that have
been abused or neglected have an incredible ability to reach out to people
with similar problems,” says Knapp, “the horses give clients the
opportunity to learn about themselves and process mental and emotional
issues without judgment.”

Ingram v. City of Columbia, S.C., Richland County C.C.P., No. 98-CP-40-2271, Mar. 10, 2000. Ingram sued the city, alleging that defendant was negligent in its operation involving the training of horses for mounted patrol. Plaintiff also claimed that defendants vehicle failed to use a signal in crossing over lanes of traffic. Defendant argued that plaintiff was speeding and that plaintiff failed to keep a proper lookout. Additionally, defendant claimed that the police vehicles flashers should have alerted plaintiff to the possibility of sudden movement of the police vehicle.

Since mid-2001 the Australian government has provided incentives for overseas students studying at Australian universities to apply for permanent residence after completing certain university courses. This has prompted a surge of enrolments in these courses. Students completing accounting and information technology have dominated this particular means of gaining permanent residence. (1) By 2004-05, the onshore skilled overseas student visa categories (880, 881 and 882) constituted a major component of Australias skilled migration program. (2) A similar pattern is currently unfolding with overseas students who have completed trade level courses in Australia. This may be read as good news, since there are serious shortages in some construction, metal and electrical trades. But that is not where the immigration growth is occurring. Rather, it is among cooks and hairdressers. As indicated in Table 1, onshore skilled overseas student visas issued to cooks, and to a lesser extent hairdressers, increased sharply from 2001-02 to 2005-06. By contrast, Table 1 shows that there were only a tiny number of visas issued to former overseas students in other trade occupations.

Marketing on the Internet is broken up into six chapters packed full of information from online marketing strategies to online media relations. Although the book does give you a few examples of company stategies it concentrates more on the psychological methods behind marketing on the web.
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY: The Internet presents both opportunities and challenges for marketers of healthcare products. An advocate for the medium argues for its increasing value in a comprehensive media mix, offers advice on how to make programs more productive, and cautions on Internet pitfalls. Can Internet advertising pay its way? Its the question on many minds. With the kinds of aggressive increases in spending for both DTC and Internet advertising that weve seen in the industry for the past two to three years, we need to have some assurance that these are resources committed wisely - and productively. In 1996, pharmaceutical industry spending on direct-to-consumer drug promotions of all kinds was $595.5 million. In 1997, that figure increased by 42 percent, to $843.9 million, and its expected to exceed $1 billion. A similar, dramatic increase is occurring in Internet advertising. For all industries, including pharmaceuticals, total 1997 online revenues reached $1 billion. The Internet Advertising Bureau projects this figure rising to $2 billion in 1998, $5 billion in the year 2000, and $9 billion by 2002.

Employment Job growth is beginning to keep pace with the regions expanding working-age population.
Total Employment Rate An important aspect of economic performance is how the resources are utilised, human capital being societys main resource. Consequently, the employment rate and its development are crucial both for economic growth and social cohesion. The Lisbon European Council stated that more and better jobs should be created and the overall target was to increase the employment rate to 70% by 2010. An intermediate goal for the employment rate was to reach 67% by January 2005. In addition, the re-launching of the Lisbon Strategy by the European Council in 2005, following the mid-term review of the Strategy, has put even more importance and focus on growth and employment.
The incentive measures are to develop activities in support of the European Employment Strategy adopted at the Lisbon European Council. Funding will be given to projects that will contribute to the development of a coordinated strategy for employment through analyses, monitoring of labour market policies and support actions carried out by the participating countries. Among the goals set out for the programme are identification of best practices and promotion of exchanges and transfers of information and experience, including ways of cooperating with the social partners and relevant local and regional authorities. The programme is also to contribute to the follow-up and evaluation of the European Employment Strategy. The EEA EFTA States also participate in the European Employment Service (EURES) (see the section below on Community services and systems).

Quarry tile is glazed or unglazed tile of the same size as paver tile, but made by a different forming method.Europe, Latin America, and the Far East are the largest producers of tile, with Italy the leader at 16.6 million ft.2/day as of 1989. Following Italy (at 24.6 percent of the world market) are Spain (12.6 percent), Brazil and Germany (both at 11.2 percent), and the United States (4.5 percent). In 2004, the EMS team identified its first large-scale initiative–solid waste management. Some of the guidelines introduced include: * Recycling opportunities for visitors. There are currently 63 recycling bins in the park, and it is estimated that there has been a 50 percent increase in the amount of commodities collected in the park, particularly plastics. * Recycling propane cylinders. Through a partnership with Grand Teton National Park, Yellowstone and Grand Teton concessionaires, the Yellowstone Park Foundation and various private entities, there is now a program of collecting and recycling propane cylinders in the greater Yellowstone area. The Propane Bottle Recycler (PBR), a mobile propane recycling unit, is now being used to recycle the estimated 3,000, one-pound propane cylinders discarded in the park each year.

Angled work stations organize this remodeled kitchen, helping to disguise its disproportionate narrowness. The trapezoid-shaped sections–one each for sink, cooktop, refrigerator, oven, desk, and pantry–provide individually tailored spaces for each basic task or appliance. The largest counter, for the sink, is 10 feet long and puts into the room at a 9-1/2[deg.] angle. Its widest near the breakfast area, where it provides a place to set dishes. It narrows at the opposite end to make room for floor-to-ceiling cabinets.
Call it catalytic conversion: remodeling cleaned up this small kitchen and helped it function more efficiently. Before, though the sink and most appliances seemed to be in the right places, there wasnt quite enough counter space. And heavy-looking painted wood cabinets and a crowded breakfast area made the entire kitchen seem cramped. For more comfortable seating, a built-in bench now wraps a corner of the eating area. The windows were restyled, with a new one added to the kitchens long wall; the breakfast areas section of this wall was pushed out about 1 1/2 feet.

Pathways To Spirituality
Self-Acceptance How can we accept ourselves just the way we really are in the moment, especially when it seems obvious that we need to change? For some of us, depending on our childhood and other programming, self-acceptance may feel like giving up striving for a better life. It may feel like over-indulging or coddling ourselves or even denying what it is we need to change in our lives. My definition of self-acceptance is: My ability to accept myself in the moment, with compassion and without self-criticism, self-evaluation or self-judgment.

In situations where a single parent lives with someone outside of marriage, that person may be referred to as a co parent. Co-parent is also the name given to the partner in a homosexual relationship who shares the household and parenting responsibilities with a childs legal adoptive or biological parent.

The home which was owned by the family prior to a divorce or separation is referred to as the family home in many state laws. In court settlements of divorce and child custody issues, the sale of the family home may be prohibited as long as the minor children are still living there with the custodial parent. The sale of the home may be permitted (or required to pay the noncustodial parent his or her share of its value) if the custodial parent moves or remarries, or when the children leave home to establish their own residences.

The term extended family traditionally meant the biological relatives of a nuclear family; i.e., the parents, sisters, and brothers of both members of a married couple. It was sometimes used to refer to the people living in the household beyond the parents and children. As family relationships and configurations have become more complex due to divorce and remarriage, extended family has come to refer to all the biological, adoptive, step-, and half-relatives.

Government agencies and other statistics-gathering organizations use the term head of household to refer to the person who contributes more than half of the necessary support of the family members (other than the spouse); in common usage, the head of household is the person who provides primary financial support for the family.

Alice Marble Alice Marble (1913-1990) was the first female tennis player ever to win both the British and U.S. womens singles, doubles, and mixed doubles championships in the same year. Alice Marble was born in Beckworth, California, on September 28, 1913. Her father died in an automobile accident when she was six years old. After his death, the family moved to San Francisco, where they lived near the tennis courts of Golden Gate Park. Playing there was free, so the sport was attractive to the poor family, especially to Marbles brothers.Despite the availability of the tennis court, Marble was more interested in baseball. By the time she was 13 years old she was the mascot and ball girl for the San Francisco Seals, a minor-league team. Her practice of entertaining fans by catching fly balls in the outfield prompted former San Francisco Seals player Joe DiMaggio to later recall to Ralph Hickok in A Whos Who of Sports Champions, She had a pretty good arm.

Theres a lovely number by Loudon Wainwright III called The Swimming Song that evokes the delights of bathing with both sharp wit and faux-naïf innocence. Kate and Anna McGarrigle covered it on their eponymous 1975 debut album — one of the all-time great records in my view, mixing folky exuberance and wrenching heartache in a manner that never seems to go stale — and in recent weeks I too have been singing The Swimming Song. All this will sound wildly unlikely to anyone who knows me but I swear it is true.

Real estate is a popular investment among Canadians. There are several advantages to investing in real estate. Real estate is leveraged. You may pay only a fraction (as low as 10%) of what the property is worth when you buy it. Real estate has utility. If you buy stocks or bonds, you cannot do anything with them; but when you buy real estate, you can use it until you sell it. For example, you can live in a house.
Real estate practice is a broad and widely defined area of the law. In a pristine sense it deals with the esoteric subject of real property law and titles. In practice the subject matter handled by real property lawyers is much broader. Many of the areas of law within real estate practice are areas of specialty themselves. Real estate lawyers examine and evaluate real property titles, handle real estate sales, purchases and other transactions, foreclose mortgages, represent developers and contractors in drafting and negotiating development and construction agreements, handle real estate financing, structure and draft the governing documents for planned developments such as condominiums, serve as counsel to community and condominium associations, draft and negotiate leases, litigate title, boundary, and other land disputes, and advise clients respecting zoning and land: use matters. The examination of real estate titles requires knowledge of corporations and other forms of business organization, wills, trusts and estates, and a practitioner handling transactions must understand contractual, business, and tax subjects as well. The subjects that are tested on the certification exam attest to this diversity. They are title issues; real estate finance; environmental and land use; condominiums and homeowner associations; landlord tenant; closings; sellers, buyers, brokers, and title insurers; real property litigation; taxation of entities and other tax issues; and ethics. Some hold an impression that at least some aspects of the real estate practice are not challenging, that the practice is increasingly title company, form, and paralegal driven, and that when business is light any lawyer with a good paralegal can Ado real estate closings. This impression is not accurate. As with any area of practice, successfully representing clients in real estate matters requires knowledge, skill, and experience. The diversity in real estate practice may mean that no one lawyer can be an expert in each practice area encompassing the modern real property practice or that are tested by the certification program. That, however, is not a reason to not seek certification. The committee recognizes that few lawyers are likely to possess specific and detailed expertise in each of the many subjects that fall within the scope of real estate.

Corey Brixen never dreamed, when he started doing silkscreen printing in Boy Scouts for a merit badge, that it would turn into a big business. “I just thought it was fun,” Brixen recalled. “I did bumper stickers for the football team in high school and that kind of thing.” Now Brixen and his partner, Son H. Nguyen, run the Brixen Sons screen-printing company in Tustin. They started the business six years ago with $100,000 of their own money and now employ some 70 people and expect to do $5 million in sales this year.
Cirrus Makes $40M Patents Deal With S3; Oak Leaves MarketOaks removal from the market makes it the third graphics company to exit the market in the last three months–including Cirrus Logic and Tseng Labs. According to Jon Peddie, president of graphics analyst house Jon Peddie Associates, most of these companies sealed their own fates by moving into multiple markets and not concentrating on graphics alone. By expanding into consumer electronics, audio and other areas, these companies lost focus and were unable to stay on top of the fast paced graphics industry, Mr. Peddie asserted. This is why you see on one side Cirrus Logic, Oak and Tseng Labs–who all were leaders in the graphics market–now completely out of it. On the other side you have Nvidia, Rendition, and ATI who are all trying to be leaders by focusing on graphics only and not branching out, said Mr. Peddie. When companies lose sight of their mission or begin making excuses for why the market is doing bad, they are destined to doom and we see that has happened.

My guest columnist this month is Helga Smith, who was a speaker at the Skills Seminar held at our annual meeting last September. Her speech on business graphics was very well received, and I have received many requests for copies. Because its a subject near and dear to our hearts, I thought that all of my readers would be interested in seeing it. I will add some of my own comments in next quarters column.

Q My mother always gives me a hard time about my career choice, even though I love my job and am completely fulfilled by it. How can I get over my irritation with her about this and help her accept me for who I am? A Los Angeles-based life coach Beth Rothenberg responds: You might say something like: I am coming to you because I love and respect you, and I know you love me and dont want me to mess up my life. But I need to feel that you respect my judgment and have faith that I am making the right choice for me at this time. Right now I am where I want to be. I need to feel that even though you may not agree, you respect my need to make my own choices.
Byline: HENRYK ZIENTEK , A former serviceman is embarking on a new campaign - as a life coach. Phil Dawson, who lives at Honley, has set up Success By Design. As a life coach, he helps individuals to take stock of their situation and make positive moves to improve themselves.
There are around 3,000 “life coaches” in America, and numbers are rising. Even so, coaches in the States are still waiting for the day when people stop saying, “What is life-coaching?” and ask, “Who is your coach?” A coach is a hybrid of business advisor, mentor, therapist, counsellor - and grandma, who thinks youre perfect and wants you to be happy. Ive worked with counsellors for years, writing about their work. I admire it enormously, but whats exciting about coaching is the directness. A counsellor could have your problems and solutions taped in minutes, but months can pass as you are gentled through the process of discovering it for yourself. Coaches instead are straight-talking (but always positive), and will say what strikes them as the truth from the first session. Coaching is achievement- focused. It feels adult, and fast - you are encouraged to take action from day one to become more profitable, healthier, deal with unfinished emotional business, have more fun, make better relationships, or whatever is holding you back. Coaches are trained to handle anything but they tend to specialise in certain professions or life situations. It can be surprising. With my coach, Madeleine Homan, who specialises in creative types, I addressed my procrastination and writing blocks in our first talk. She didnt advise me about how to work harder, but asked me to take more time off - making one working day a week my “creative day” when I do whatever appeals. I tried out this and other suggestions, and just seven weeks later I work with more pleasure, less angst and increased effectiveness. I feel healthier, more energetic and more relaxed. Madeleine is in New York (not so crazy, as a half-hour call costs under pounds 4), but there are coaches in Britain (most working for corporates), 50 training with Coach University, the American “virtual” course, carried out through teleconferencing and e-mail. Some come from caring professions, but felt it made sense to look at practical and financial issues as well as the emotional. Some began as business consultants but couldnt ignore personal issues. They have been coaching for years, usually face-to-face, but some are starting to offer a telephone service. Sherrie Charlton is a UK coach. Vaughn Khelifa, who works in the pharmaceutical industry, was coached by her for 18 months.” I thought it would be like training - being lectured to by an expert. Instead Sherrie helped me think differently: what am I looking for from this; is this the best approach for that person? At the end, I ask myself if I handled it the best way, or how I could improve on it. It has given me confidence and skills that have helped me progress in my job and develop even better relationships with my husband and daughter.” Sherrie believes you have to look to your own development when helping others develop, and spends a quarter of her work hours on this. She is doing a Masters in personal and organisational development as well as a Coach University course. The training is fascinating in itself (Ive signed up). It is commonsense, with a spiritual slant, underpinned by a philosophy of personal excellence. Vocabulary can be puzzling (or a source of joy). One student supplied a word to a trainer who thanked her for “up-languaging me”; Madeleine thought I was confessing to promiscuity when I said I was a “slut”, though I was only admitting to cobwebs and clutter. But the concepts are universal and living with integrity one that is key. C ANCER The scope of the problem in the United States is large. Some 1.2 million people were diagnosed with potentially fatal cancer in the year 2000. Of these, 59 percent were expected to live for at least five years (in some, the cancer may be continuously present for more than five years) with or without evidence of cancer. People of all ages, from birth to advanced age, can manifest cancer, making it the second-leading cause of death in the United States. In children cancer is unusual, but it has consistently been the leading cause of death from disease. As mortality rates from cardiovascular disease decline, the proportion of cancer deaths increases. It is anticipated that the mortality rate from cancer will surpass that from heart disease by the year 2050. Direct and indirect financial costs of cancer in the United States for the year 2000 were $178 billion.Developing countries represented 80 percent of the worlds approximately 6 billion people in the year 2000. In these countries, cancer has grown from a minor public health issue in the early 1990s to a rapidly expanding problem by the beginning of the twenty-first century. The emergence of a middle class, with attendant changes in lifestyle, increased longevity and exposure to potential carcinogens, and expectations of improved medical delivery systems have fueled the growing impact of cancer in the third world. The financial resources and socio-medical infrastructure needed to diagnose and treat, much less screen and prevent these cancers, are lacking in the developing world.A controversial issue in the United States is whether there has been progress in the War on Cancer declared by Congress in 1971. Since then a large flow of tax dollars has been directed to basic and clinical research with the goal of eliminating cancer. Mortality rates from all forms of cancer have declined slightly from 1990 through 2000, but with large variations among different types of cancer. Optimistic explanations include significant improvements in treatment and prevention. More pessimistic analyses suggest that some of the more common cancers can be diagnosed earlier so that benchmark five-year mortality rates have diminished, but that the actual course of the disease is unaffected because treatments are not really more effective.
CancerCancer is, in general, more common in industrialized nations, but there has been a growth in cancer rates in developing countries, particularly as these nations adopt the diet and lifestyle habits of industrialized countries. Over one million people in the United States get cancer each year. Anyone can get cancer at any age; however, about 80 percent of all cancers occur in people over the age of fifty-five.Cancer can affect any site in the body. About one hundred human cancers are recognized. The four most common cancers in the United States are: lung, colon/rectum, breast, and prostate . Together, these cancers account for over 50 percent of total cancer cases in the United States each year.
Thousands of cancer sufferers are being denied life-saving drugs because of delays and bureaucracy in making them available on the NHS. The hold-ups are a matter of life and death for desperate people who have been diagnosed with cancer of the breast, colon or lung, or with a brain tumour. Doctors are furious that drugs such as Avastin, which is used to treat colon cancer, and Ce-tuximab, a treatment for head and neck cancers, are being blocked by the National Institute for Clinical Excellence (Nice), a government-appointed quango set up to decide which drugs should be routinely prescribed on the NHS.

INVESTMENT advisers say the best returns for the year are likely to come from the property market. And real estate investment trusts (REITs), which offer dividends from rental income derived from buildings invested in or owned, should become a very interesting investment option.
